Along with our Investment Managers, we presented a cheque for €13,500 to Cheshire Ireland
On 10th December 2019, Jonathan Diamond, Tom Bull and I met Cheshire Ireland at the offices of our Investment Managers, Brewin Dolphin in Dublin. We presented them with a cheque for €13,500 to provide a wheelchair accessible vehicle for the Cheshire Dundalk Service.
About Cheshire Ireland
Cheshire Ireland provides a range of support services to people with both physical and neurological conditions. This can be in their homes, in residential centres, in supported accommodation and even, in standalone respite facilities. The Charity provides services to 281 people in 21 centres in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Wicklow, Limerick, Donegal, Kerry, Carlow, Waterford, Sligo and Mayo. This assistance is provided to people with very complex and major support needs. Cheshire Ireland’s aim is to provide quality, person-centred services, which assist people with disabilities to live a life of their own choosing.
History of Cheshire Ireland
Cheshire Ireland has been established in Ireland for nearly 50 years, with their first centre opening in Ardeen, Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow. They are currently the biggest provider of supported accommodation in the country.
Up until the 1990s, the accommodation service provided by Cheshire took the form of a “traditional” residential home. However, over the course of the last decade, and in response to service users wishes (and as a result of evaluative and qualitative research), Cheshire’s model of service provision has changed and expanded.
Present day services
Today, all of the centres aim to facilitate people to live as independently as possible and with the maximum degree of choice as to how they live their lives. Over recent years, Cheshire Ireland has developed new centres around the country where people with disabilities live in their own apartments within a small complex, with support as required, from Cheshire staff. Many of the older centres have been refurbished in line with this policy.
Currently, more than one-third of Cheshire Ireland service users live in self-contained accommodation. Additional services in line with this model of life-time adaptable housing are in development.
The cheque presentation
This grant presentation coincided with HSF’s joint annual Investment Managers meeting with UBS and Brewin Dolphin, so our Investment Managers joined us in presenting the donation to Loughlin Quinn, Cheshire Ireland Service Co-ordinator!
